Windham Textile Museum
(Willimantic,
Connecticut)
Excerpts from Beth:
After
the great find of 'frogs on spools' we didn't know what else
Willimantic had to offer obviously nothing that could compare
to giant, randomly-placed amphibians!! Enter, the Willimantic
Textile Museum.
The first glance of the 'special exhibit self-guided' section
of the museum led the Roadchix to believe they'd stumbled
upon someone's weekend project instead of a town landmark.
There was a special exhibit on Hawaiian shirts that basically
amounted to the citizens of Willimantic loaning their flowered
garb to the cause. However, the guided section of the tour
more than made-up for the paltry special-collection.
Collections of thread and fabric were only part of the extensive
museum. A peek into the lives of the textile workers was afforded
with rooms set-up to resemble the living quarters of the trades
people and their wealthy managers. Also, a factory was set-up
where the Roadchix could try their hand at carding wool and
spinning thread (note to self: spinning wheel operation NOT
a 'strength').
The tour guide was extremely energetic and informative and
gave us a top-notch private tour . . .and then led us to the
gift shop of exclusively frog-themed merchandise a-ha! They
capitalize on the frogs as well.
