Trail Ride in Monte Vista
(There's a
First Time for Everything)
Excerpts from Kristy:
Contrary
to popular belief, Roadchix does not plan everything we do
in advance. In fact, some of our best discoveries are found
on the journey. And the Trail Ride is no exception to this.
At our KOA campground, conveniently located next to one of
Colorado's many state prisons, we saw a sign for Trail Rides.
Yet another irresistible opportunity. (We seem to run into
a lot of those.)
So, we signed up at the KOA office and tramped down the driveway
to the Corral first thing in the morning. I had no experience
and wasn't embarrassed in the least that I knew absolutely
nothing about horses. Not even what side to mount up on. So
the main goal was to try something new, have some fun, and
not get thrown from the horse.
The instructions were quick and I actually don't remember
them. I do remember thinking, "Wow, 30 seconds and I
can ride a horse? Everybody said this was hard, what do they
know?" Well, it wasn't that hard, the horse just follows
the horse in front. I'm sure I had the worst "seat"
in existence, but I happily bounced along badgering our guide.
I
soon found out that our guide had a story to tell. A great
story in fact. She was only 15, but had competed in one of
those 3 leg roping events where you chase down a calf and
tie 3 of its legs together. She also used to ride a dirt bike
until she broke her arm (cool, she's tough too). Here was
a roadchick in training if I ever saw one. Unfortunately,
the trail ride was over all too soon and back we (or I) bounced
to the Corral. I highly recommend trying this out some time.
Especially if you've never ridden a horse.
