World's LARGEST Popcorn Ball
(Sac City, Iowa))
Excerpts from Roadchick K:
We almost missed the World’s Largest Ball of Popcorn. I couldn’t find real documented proof that the ball still existed. I did find evidence that the ball had once been created, but had been blown-up at an area fair with unexpected results. Let’s just say that when you make a giant ball of popcorn, it doesn’t always dry in the middle…for years.
I then read that they were planning to build another ball because it had been so popular and so many people were asking to see this enormous confection. Beth came to the rescue and in our “Welcome to Iowa 2007” summer guide there was a reference to the new World’s Largest Ball of Popcorn.
Now this beauty is a must-stop-and-see. The town built a pretty little red barn to house the ball and it’s encased in yards and yards of plastic and nestled in the barn against a giant glass window. You can even see the slight growth of mold and the insects that have died gorging themselves to death of its sticky sweetness. Then there’s the giant can of Coca-Cola sitting next to the barn (in case a hungry giant stops by to eat the ball, he has to have something to wash down all of that popcorn!)
The town really knows how to capitalize and a small shop in town actually sells t-shirts advertising the “World’s Largest Ball of Popcorn!” Sac City gets an A+ for this well-kept attraction with a readily available kitschy souvenir to boot.
