Portland, Oregon
(Beth's Introduction
to CART Racing)
Excerpts from Kristy:
June 20-21, 1998
Portland
was probably my favorite city on the trip. The climate and
the scenery most closely matched my native Pennsylvania, probably
one of the reasons I felt so comfortable. But more importantly,
the people in Portland had an easy-going attitude that contrasted
sharply with the crowded, fast-paced commuting I experienced
in Washington, DC. I saw people moseying to work at 9:15 am,
unconcerned that they were so obviously late. What a pleasant
change from the harried commuters I'm used to.
But,
I'm getting ahead of myself. Before we enjoyed Portland the
city, we went to the G.I. Joe Budweiser 200, held every year
at the Portland International Raceway. Beth had never been
to a race before, and I must say that I purchased some of
the worst seats ever). Plus, to make matters worse, my favorite
driver (Greg Moore) wrecked himself and about 4 other drivers
on the first lap. Not a great day for racing. Fortunately,
Beth weathered a fairly bad race and became a fan anyway.
