County Kerry
(Cheap Sweaters,
Tin Soldiers and More Castles)
Excerpts from Beth:
Kilarney, in County Kerry, is the kick-off point for the famous
Ring of Kerry, a 156 km driving tour that skirts all the touristy
attractions of the Western Coast.
That
being said, it is also the best place to procure reasonably-priced,
slightly lower-quality Irish Goods: Hand Knit sweaters, Claddagh
Rings, Celtic Knot Themes, "Kiss me, I'm Irish"
shirts, etc. However, there are also more historic and interesting
landmarks to peruse if you can dig for them under the pile
of Irish flag Cat-In-The-Hat hats.
One of our first stops in the County was a Tin Soldier Factory-who
else but my dear Roadchick K could track down something so
kooky. We braved the windy, narrow "yellow" roads
following crude signs painted with soldiers until we came
upon a small building at the end of a residential dirt road.
Inside were glass cases packed with tin figures. Many of the
traditional soldiers, but also some more modern figures. In
fact, they have the rights to the production of Lord of the
Rings tin figures. I was able to score a great deal on a Gandalf
with one arm!!
The castle tour this stop was Ross Castle.
