Winterthur
(Wilmington, Delaware)
Excerpts from Roadchick K:
Winterthur was built by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. Yes, that Dupont. Originally, the Duponts were gunpowder manufacturers and became fabulously wealthy through the years and are now the Duponts who make plastic.
Winterthur was been beautifully restored and maintained down to the tiniest detail. It's so extensive that they give different themed tours. The estate is huge and even has a children's garden for the kids to play in with your spouse while you tour the house. You could easily spend an entire day here and with the cost of admission, you should!
I am the history buff of the two of us, but furniture is not really "my thing." For some reason, we made the mistake of going on the furniture tour and while it was very informative, it really wasn't we were looking for. I think we would have been better off with the children's tour that told the history of the inhabitants of the house. I guess that's for when we bring the Roadchicklets back when they're older!
